Creating a comfortable, safe, eco-friendly environment for your children is an important step in instilling green values in their lives. One of the best ways to do this is to surround them with green stimuli that will be a daily reminder about how important it is to be environmentally-friendly. This does not just mean plants and other green objects. There is so much more to sustainability for you to explore together as a family when designing your child’s bedroom. Check out these tips for kids’ room decor that will definitely enhance the green vibe and introduce eco-conscious living in your child’s life that will last a lifetime.

Furniture

Furniture is expensive but can last a lifetime. Go the extra mile to choose green furniture products. Some aspects to look for are certified sustainable wood, bamboo, reclaimed materials, and recycled metal and plastic. Also, if you already have furniture that simply needs an upgrade, clean the stains with toxin-free, water-based products. When it comes to furniture painting, rely on products that are derived from hemp and linseed oils and are non-toxic and safe for ingestion. Search for eco-friendly manufacturers that make beeswax wood finishing products and non-toxic tung oil, which are safe for coating and protecting wood.

Linens

Choose your own natural organic materials, such as organic cotton, wool, or jute rugs. Growing conventional cotton entails using some of the most toxic chemicals, like pesticides and fertilizers, that unfortunately impact the earth’s air, water, soil, and the health of people who live and work near the cotton farms. However, you can make a huge difference by choosing products made with organic cotton, which is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Modern Kids Design has the most adorable natural and organic bedding to brighten up your child’s bedroom.

Flooring

If removing the current flooring is a part of your eco-friendly renovation plan, consider asking the carpet installer how they apply their carpet products. Opt for a professional who approaches this task in an eco-friendly way. Given that adhesives can be toxic, plenty of carpenters will replace them with tacks to secure the carpeting. When choosing a carpet, instead of opting for synthetic options (which tend to look very attractive) opt for natural fibers.

Paint and Wallpaper

Painting the walls in your child’s bedroom is one of the best stimuli you can give them. If you decorate the walls with eco-friendly motifs, such as nature and animals, your children will have a constant reminder of natural elements. When painting the walls, use low or no volatile organic compound (VOC) paint. With a selection of eco-friendly paints, you can turn your child’s room into a magical, yet safe, place very quickly.

If you decide to use wallpaper, choose your products carefully as many of the products out there are coated with PVC (which carries known health risks) or use toxic glues. Some companies are now using earth-friendly options like clay coatings that increase durability, recycled and sustainably harvested materials, and water-based inks.

Decor

Spending time in nature is so beneficial to our health and well-being. It calms us–reducing feelings of stress, anxiety, and anger. It is important to include decorative elements in your child’s bedroom that evoke the natural environment, such as stuffed animals, plants, flowers, mini trees, and pictures of nature. Next, place skylights sporadically (or, even, in an organized pattern) around the room. They will upgrade the atmosphere and set the tone for the room. Finally, consider carefully the colors you choose; different colors cause a different emotional reaction than others. Blues, purples, and greens are the most calming colors, so perfect for a child’s bedroom.

Air Quality

Take precautionary measures while using building tools and methods if you are considering renovating while still living in your home. Open windows and doors to allow air particles and construction dust to leave the home, and seal off construction areas from the rest of the house. Change your air filters after the renovation. When you are done renovating, clean the bedding, carpets, and all surfaces with eco-friendly cleaning products. Before moving your children in, make sure to air out the room sufficiently. To ensure that your indoor air quality is consistently safe, sign up with a HomeLab monitoring service.
